Shiatsu Sessions

Shiatsu, (Shi = finger, atsu = pressure), is a Japanese manual therapy in which the therapist uses the thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply physical pressure to the body in order to balance the 'Qi', (energy), of the body. Shiatsu treatment produces a state of relaxation known as the para-sympathetic state. It is in this state that our body does its healing. Shiatsu works on points of the body known as, 'tsubos', which are along energy pathways, or lines of the body called, 'meridians'. There are 12 main meridians in this system, (following Traditional Chinese Medicine theory), each running bi-laterally on the body, and each corresponding to an organ of the body. By applying Shiatsu, we aim to restore balance to the meridians/organs/systems involved. Shiatsu is effective relief for many ailments; musculoskeletal issues, (ex: lower back, neck and shoulder pain), headaches, stress, insomnia, arthritis, menstrual issues, poor digestion, and many other conditions. There are three main types of Shiatsu; Nippon Shiatsu (aka Namikoshi Shiatsu), Zen Shiatsu, and Tsubo Therapy, (aka Acupressure Shiatsu).  The type of shiatsu I do is a mixture of all three of these forms. It incorporates Hara Diagnosis, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Meridian Theory in its assessment of the client. As such, my treatments mainly consist of Shiatsu along the meridians and points of the body. However, based on the chief complaint(s), treatment goal(s) of the client, and the condition of the body, I also include such techniques as;

Tuina

Medical Qi-gong

Stretching

Tuina / Medical Qi-gong / Stretching

Tuina

Tuina massage is an ancient form of massage that focuses on balancing a person’s energy. Practitioners use various techniques, including kneading, pressing, rolling, and stretching.

Medical Qi-gong

Medical Qi-gong seeks to balance the body using techniques that rely on energy work, not manual contact. It is a gentle type of treatment used to treat specific ailments and symptoms of disease. Recent studies have proven Medical Qi-gong to be effective in treating: Fibromyalgia, Depression, Weakened immune system, and other ailments. As well as the treatment, clients are shown Qi-gong exercises that they can do at home that will help them to maintain balance.

Stretching

Stretching as a form of physical therapy in assisted stretching, which a specific muscle or tendon (or muscle group) is deliberately expanded and flexed in order to improve the muscle's felt elasticity and achieve comfortable muscle tone.  The result is a feeling of increased muscle control, flexibility, and range of motion. Stretching is also used therapeutically to alleviate cramps and to improve function in daily activities by increasing range of motion.

Foot Reflexology

There are over 7000 nerve endings in each human foot, which correspond to all of our body systems, organs and nerve functions. According to the theory, the reflexologist's application of pressure to feet sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves in these extremities to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level.

Seminars

Currently I am offering my services, in the form of seminars to any groups that may be interested.  These seminars are instructional in design, and will have the participants actively joining in as I discuss whatever the topic might be.  I have been doing seminars for over ten years now around Southern Ontario, and I very much enjoy teaching in this way as it lets me meet new people, gives me exposure to different martial arts, and gives me the opportunity to constantly review my material as I pass it on to others.  These are the seminar subjects which I offer through Five Element Shiatsu;

Qi-gong

Lohan (ligament/tendon strengthening form)

Meditation (standing and sitting methods)

Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Meridians

Nutrition

Stretching (static and dynamic stretching techniques)

The seminars are each 2 hours long. I require $20 per participant, with a minimum of 10 participants per seminar. The maximum number would depend on your facility of course.  Generally the topics I teach are not meant for very young children, as the seminar topics of of a serious nature. Therefore I ask that any participants attending the seminars be age 16 +, (use your discretion depending on the topic). If any of the above seminars seem of interest to you, or if you have any questions, please call me at 647-668-1456 or email me at ryuukodojo@hotmail.com
